Cambridge Sustainable Food Half Marathon 2024

Cambridge Sustainable Food CIC (CSF) is a community interest company based in Cambridge, UK and the surrounding areas. CSF works with residents, businesses, organisations and community groups to advocate and enable access to healthy and sustainably produced food that is good for people and the planet.

In March 2020, CSF in partnership with the Cambridge Food Poverty Alliance, developed the city’s emergency food programme. A big of this was the establishment of the now eight Community Food Hubs across the city which provide free food to people in need without referral and a central Community Food Centre which receives, stores and distributes food including fresh organic produce from CoFarm Cambridge each week to the hubs and other organisations feeding people across the city.

Almost four years on, CSF continues to work hard to ensure that those who cannot afford food in our city don’t go without and is now working with the food hubs to transition to affordable food models (e.g. social supermarkets).

Since 2015, CSF has also worked with Cambridge City Council and partners across the city to coordinate the Holiday Lunch Network. This programme provides free lunches and activities for children and their families who are struggling to make ends meet at venues across the city during the school holidays.

Since March 2020
  • Over 637 tonnes of food have been redistributed to Cambridge's food hubs network
  • Over 213 tonnes of surplus food have been saved from landfill to Cambridge's food hubs network
  • Over 20 tonnes of organic veg from CoFarm have been redistributed
  • Over 21,000 meals have been served to households in need

Cambridge is the most unequal city in the UK and Covid-19 exacerbated issues of food insecurity already present in the city before the pandemic. Now, with the Cost of Living crisis, people are experiencing greater hardship, especially the most vulnerable in our community.

Here’s what your donation could fund:
  • £15 could fund vegetables for a family for a week
  • £150 could provide the ingredients for one holiday lunch event during the school holidays
  • £760 could keep all of the food hubs we support stocked for a week

More information about Cambridge Sustainable Food can be found on their website and in their most recent Impact Report or hear the stories of some of the people facing food insecurity in Cambridge below.
