CALVERTON NATIONAL CEMETERY HONOR GUARD
Donation protected
Hello. My name is Christopher Bottcher and in addition to being a private citizen I am also a Navy Reservist here on Long Island. As a Reservist, I, along with many service members from all of our military branches, participate in funeral honors daily at cemeteries across Nassau and Suffolk county. One of our most busiest locations is Calverton National Cemetery. It is the largest national cemetery in the U.S and is also one of the busiest, conducting more than 7,000 internments each year.
At Calverton, military honor guard members from the U.S Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Army and Air Force spend anywhere from 4 to 8 hours a day preparing and waiting for their respective funeral details to arrive. The Veterans Administration (VA) provides a trailer on site for honor guard members to sit in until they are called upon to render final honors. Unfortunately, they do not provide the couches, chairs, microwave, T.V., coffee maker, etc that are currently being used. All of the amenities within the trailer were either purchased by honor guard members personally or donated some years ago. As seen in the photos below, the couches and futons that are being used by your dedicated service members today are weathered, uncomfortable and old.

With your help and generosity, I am hoping to purchase new couches, chairs, and a few other comforts such as a coffee maker and microwave for our current military veterans who so professionally and gracefully conduct final military honors every day. I know most of these service members from all the branches personally and I can tell you first hand the caliber of people they are. By providing some of these comfortable conditions, it would lift the spirits of these honorable men and women as they perform the emotionally tough job of presenting the flag of our nation to a grieving spouse or family member. When the new couches and amenities are delivered, I will post current photos on Facebook to show you how your hard earned money was spent. On behalf of all of the members who currently provide honors at Calverton National Cemetery, I thank you in advance for your time and generosity.
Very Respectfully,
Chris Bottcher
