A magnitude 7.4 earthquake — the strongest Colombia has recorded in a decade — hit the west of the country. The epicenter was San José del Palmar, in Chocó, and the damage spread more than 250 miles in every direction.

Cali: at least 20 buildings collapsed with people trapped underneath, according to Mayor Alejandro Eder. Hospital Universitario del Valle, where thousands of people from my city are born and treated because they have nowhere else to go, partially collapsed. The hospitals that should be receiving the injured are now part of the emergency.

Pereira and the coffee region: the hardest hit by death toll. The governor of Risaralda confirmed dozens killed in structural collapses.

Manizales: buildings down, deaths confirmed.

Quibdó and Chocó: the department at the epicenter, and one of Colombia’s poorest — without the resources to handle an emergency this size, even on an ordinary day. Today is not an ordinary day.

Medellín, Armenia, Cartago, Buenaventura, Popayán: damage reported across the region.

Eight airports across western Colombia closed with structural damage: Cali, Pereira, Manizales, Quibdó, Armenia, Cartago, Buenaventura, and Popayán. Aid can’t reach the hardest-hit areas by air.

As of midday on August 10, the government confirmed 111 dead. That number is still climbing.

This isn’t just my city. I have family in the coffee region, where buildings also came down. I have acquaintances in Chocó. It’s the whole region that made me, end to end.

I’m in Dallas. I’m 2,500 miles away and I can’t lift rubble with my hands. But I can do this.

100% of your donation goes to Direct Relief. This campaign is linked directly to them through GoFundMe — the money never touches my account. It goes from your card to the organization, and your tax-deductible receipt comes straight from them. Direct Relief is already mobilizing medical aid for Colombia and works with hospitals across Latin America, with a four-star Charity Navigator rating.

I’ll post every update I get, in Spanish and in English.

Cali made me. Today it’s Chocó, Quibdo, Cali, Pereira, Manizales...

If you’d rather give directly to another organization, Convoy of Hope has also opened a fund specifically for this earthquake. Where you give matters less than that you give: what matters is that the help gets there.
