Calexico Asylum-Seeker and Migrant Fund

Hi, My name is Alexis and on Dec, 27th, a group of community members responded to 20 asylum seekers being dropped off in Downtown Calexico. What I saw and have heard in the last couple of days is disheartening. On December 23, 30+ asylum seekers were released. Street releases occurred on the 24th, 26th, and 27th of December. Those are the ones we know of. One of the releases included six children who had not eaten and had to be housed in hotels. One child was ill and stable but appeared to have cold symptoms and needed medical services. The child was then transferred to San Diego, where we coordinated with San Diego partners upon their release to find them shelter. One migrant has been kidnapped on their journey here. This is unacceptable.

Normally, migrants stay at shelters for a few days as they travel to their loved ones at their final destinations. The difficulties with holiday travel made it difficult for shelters to able to move migrants as quickly, limiting their capacity. With limited capacity, the shelters only accept women and children. When they reached capacity, there is nowhere for people to go. The federal government and border patrol decided to drop off people without access to shelter, food, and means to communicate with their loved ones.

Some people had nothing. Their stuff had been stolen and the trauma they had endured cannot be overstated. They're being dropped off in the streets, without shelter, food, and ways to connect to their loved ones. Community members purchased food, clothing, coats, access to cellphones, and internet access. The Neighborhood House provided shelter and the County Department of Social Services helped get people on their way. With the lifting of title 42, this will only get worse. We need our communities support to help reunite people with their loved ones. No one deserves to dropped off without access to shelter or food. Please make a donation to support asylum-seekers.
