Cambodian Orphanage Volunteer

Hello everyone,

As you know, on the 20th October 2014, I began my journey to volunteer in Cambodia. Well, I am now more than half way through and so much has been accomplished. As you know, Cambodia has an incredibly high number of orphans comparative to population. Many children have lost their parents due to HIV, while other parents cannot provide food, accommodation and education for their children. However, many “orphans” still have parents or relatives they may visit sometimes. I have been fortunate enough to have spent the last few months working at "Orphanage and Poverty Center." OPC as we call it, cares for 31 beautiful children between the ages of 3 to 21.

OPC was founded by a local Cambodian woman Mrs. Sopheap and her husband Dara, they began their life’s calling by feeding the homeless and orphaned children that lived in the city dump of Phnom Penh. From there Sopheap started a small school teaching these children how to read, write and speak the native language of Khmer. With her leadership and the support of volunteers OPC was born to properly care for these beautiful children. Mrs. Sopheap made the bold decision to take the children out of the city dump in Phnom Penh and moved them all to a home on the outskirts of Siem Reap.

OPC is now fully sponsored by a private foundation which is based in the Netherlands, Stichting Kinderhuis Camodja: founded in 2010 by Mr. Theodore Bolten, who once volunteered with Mrs. Sopheap in Phnom Penh, and has since then worked tirelessly at changing the lives of these children.

Mr. Bolten and his foundation Stitchting Kinderhuis Cambodja, has worked seamlessly with Mrs. Sopheap and the Cambodian governmet to follow strict protocol and ensure that all the standards of the children’s welfare are looked after. As part of the ongoing efforts to support OPC Stichting Kinderhuis Cambodja raises funds to be used exclusively and directly for the livelihood of the children at OPC.

I strongly encourage each and every one of you to consider supporting OPC by view the web page of Stitchting Kinderhuis Cambodja, which can be viewed in both Dutch and English. All donations are certified and tax deductable and it is only $2 a day to provide the care for just one child and my goal is to secure enough funding to provide "Private Education" to each child at OPC so they can learn to be the future nurses, doctors, teachers and leaders of this beautiful country.

Thank you all for your time and consideration. Remember that every penny counts so no donation is to small and if you could please spread the word to those in your network.
