BWS Class of 2015 for Black Lives
We, the members of the Brentwood School Class of 2015, stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Movement. As alumni of an elite independent school and beneficiaries of certain privileges, we join the active fight against systemic racism, white supremacy, and the long history of oppression of the Black community. We choose to not turn a blind eye to the active and on-going efforts around the country. We stand firmly against intolerance, discrimination, and racism. We will do everything in our capabilities to fight against these oppressive forces in order to build a better tomorrow.
The protests that are unfolding across the country are signals that we should be listening to the Black community and learning from the mistakes we have made as a society. Los Angeles has been and continues to be a site for racial unrest and resistance. The on-going demands for justice are not separate from but are deeply intertwined with the 1965 Watts Rebellion and the 1992 Los Angeles Riots after the wrongful acquittal of the four police officers involved in the Rodney King assault. This long-standing history of racial inequality and counterinsurgency must end. We see the ever-growing need for coalitional resistance, and so we champion the efforts of those fighting for equity and justice.
We are doing this for: George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, David McAtee, Ahmaud Arbery, and for the countless Black lives we have lost and continue to lose because of historical and on-going atrocities of violent racism.
In an effort to support those fighting for anti-racist reform and systemic change, we are calling on the members of the Class of 2015 and the broader Brentwood community to donate to our class fundraiser. All donations will be sent to organizations focused on fighting racial injustice: Black Lives Matter Los Angeles and the Marsha P. Johnson Institute. The funds collected throughout the month of June will be split evenly between these two organizations. Let us band together as a class and community and help where it is needed.
