Tiny house: Avoiding Homelessness
Bong Wee Kwong (known as Light BWK online) is going to be without a home in the next 45 days. He had a long term plan of building a home on land that his family owns in several years from now, however, his current home will be sold much sooner than planned. He needs a permanent living solution to avoid being homeless.
My name is Lee Posey. I am a Sheet Metal worker from the Seattle area, in the US. Bong and I have been friends for 10 years, and business partners for over 6 years. Together we maintain and curate BlenderNPR.org, a site dedicated to Non-Photorealistic and Expressive Rendering of 3D CG material.
The old house:
As seen from the intro video of him and his brother clearing the path to the old house, the old house is in a really bad shape. The back extension of the house already collapsed. The trees are pressing down on all of the remaining upright roofs as well. The foundation poles and beams are tilted not only from the weight but from termites infestation. Repairing the old house will not get done fast enough before he is homeless and will cost much more than building a tiny house. The only solution in a fast approaching deadline is building a tiny home.
The state of the old house:
Bong will be using donated funds to build a permanent Tiny Home.
Funds will go toward:
+ Basic Furniture & extra roof materials
+ Water tanks Cost: USD 300 (Updated)
+ Prefab Shipping Container (Updated) Cost: USD4k [Fund secured]
+ A big enough solar system, which includes MPPT charge controller, inverter, solar panels and battery bank (Updated) Cost: USD 2.5k (minimal)
+ Financial support while setting up the house, adjustment period fund, and other bits and bobs
+ Hiring help to expedite all the processes
Where will he build is home?
Samarahan, Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, Malaysia
The house site:
Your support will get Bong into a permanent home. He would also teach survival skills if in case one gets into homelessness.
1st milestone (US$ 4000) Shipping container: REACHED
2nd Milestone (US$ 6500) Solar system: Not reached
I'm really grateful for all the donations and everyone who helped in any kind (paypal donations, sharing this campaign etc), you guys are my angels (ok that might sound cheesy but I really mean it). This has lowered my stress by a lot.
What I'm going to do next?
1. Fix the path so that the container truck can enter, turn and set the shipping container. Mainly getting rid of tree stubs.
2. Meetup with the container prefab company to finalize designs and payment.
3. Make the 7th BNPR show! I thought I was never to ever make it. Now I'm sure I can assemble the show. Also celebrating my birthday on the 20th.
Now I'm resting from the work in extreme heat from last Tuesday. I cut a path about 70 meters to the stream (bush whacking), sprayed about 200 meters of weeds. Also biked about 32km (19.9 miles). The ambient temperature was 35.4 degree Celsius. I had to escape to the stream to chill from the heat, build a tiny dam to raise water level and I caught a crab. It was fun.
Again, 谢谢 for everything. I couldn't have made it this far if not for your generous help.
Note: those trees were blocking the path, so they were removed.
First I want to *squeeee* just a bit, we are over $3k! So close to the $4k so we can move forward with getting the container!!
I am genuinely touched and humbled by the awesome people giving so far!
I want to highlight the Blender Community especially, you all are so kind and compassionate to your members!
Any sharing you can continue to do will help us get our first milestone. As you can see, Light is motoring along with the preparations to deliver the container. I am impressed by his initiative and drive, which are the main reasons I have chosen to back my long time friend and business partner -- he is basically my brother! For my own reasons, I am generally not much of an online presence, so again, I want to extend my thanks and further invitations for all to keep sharing and help get this campaign to the finish.
PS - Extra special shout out to Bart @ Blender Nation - The campaign has gained exponential momentum since. Thank you!
I'm super touched by the donations, well wishes and supports. I'm still trying to process all that happened. Super special thanks to Ton, Jerry, Mike, Rita and Bart who brought so much attention to my plight.
Putting myself out there is very scary. You all know where I will live. XD
For this weekend and the next week, I will be clearing more of the path into the property. The weeds grow extremely fast and the path is long (~160m x 3m) just too much for me to handle. As much as I hate herbicide, I have to use it (only on the path). I will continue to chop the blocking trees. That will be very taxing on the body. Also I learned some skills to down (mid sized) trees more efficiently (will share the technique when I'm there). I hope the weather will cooperate.
We are still not near the USD4k nor the USD6k milestone yet. So please share this campaign around (now I'm more scared after writing that). Thank you guys. :hugs:
