Hi, my name is Kush. I am a mother to a beautiful, funny and bright 7 year old boy. Ever since he was about 2 years old, my husband and I suspected he had Autism Spectrum Disorder (it turns out we are most likely nuerodivergent too. I'm on the waiting list for an ADHD assessement) When he started school he was put on the SEND register and we started the process for an assessment. We have recently started the process for an ADHD referral. We are also in the process of trying to obtain an EHCP.
We recently found an amazing day care centre that runs family days and activities for SEND families and we would like to take him there regularly. Unfortunately, it's not reachable by public transport. Nurturing, supportive and affirmng spaces for families like ours, especially if you are on a low income are difficult to come by. I'm currently unemployed, after years of working in the charity sector supporting refugees. Juggling family demands and working has affected my mental health and I was struggling. My husband works as a carer for people with learning disabilities.
Having a car to take him to such a place and the freedom it brings would be a life saver. I know some might see it is as a luxury but for SEND families, it's essential. Managing meltdowns and over stimulation on public transport is also incredibly stressful. Especially as we are all nueridiverse.
I know times are hard and for many, you're just managing to afford the bare essentials, as we are. Your donations will help so much and will open up a whole new world to a curious and amazing boy.
