On Sunday, July 13, 2025, our community lost Butch Carnes, a kind, steady, and deeply loved son, brother, husband, father, and friend. Butch was a lifelong resident of Crystal Lake. He was an excellent athlete. He loved to ski, golf, fish and play hockey among many other things. His passing leaves behind his wife, Julie Carnes, a dedicated social worker at Crystal Lake South High School who has spent her life helping others, and their two sons. One son is currently a junior in college, working hard to build a future, while the other is a young man with special needs who requires around the clock lifelong care.
Butch was the kind of person who made life feel a little more grounded. He loved his family deeply and showed up for them in every way that mattered. In the spirit of that same quiet generosity, many people have asked how they can support his family during this time.
This page was created to give friends, colleagues, and loved ones a space to do just that. Contributions will help ease the road ahead — with flexibility for whatever the family needs most in the coming months and beyond.
Thank you for showing up for them the way Butch always showed up for others. Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a difference. If you’re not able to donate, please consider sharing this page with your friends, family, or community.
