September 11, 2026, marks the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The events of 9/11 had a profound and lasting impact on the fire service around the world. Among the 2,977 victims lost that day were 343 firefighters from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), representing one of the largest line-of-duty losses in fire service history.

The sacrifices made by those firefighters continue to influence firefighter training, emergency response, leadership, health and safety standards, and public service values throughout the global fire service community.

To commemorate the significant anniversary, firefighters from Canning Volunteer Fire Department take on the challenge of hiking to 'The Split' in bunker gear on September 12th to raise funds for local firefighter charity The FireSafe Foundation.

The FireSafe Foundation, Founded in 2026, was created to promote awareness around Firefighter Cancer and Carcinogen Exposures. Their goal is to educate, provide grant assistance, and support Canadian Fire Fighters in living healthier lifestyles.
