Building Reyna's Future

Meet Reyna Iris. During my time in the Peace Corps, I became very close with her family (and numerous nephews!). She's a testament to the incredible will power of a single mom. A flower, holding eternal bloom. Reyna's raised three beautiful children, each of whom are beginning to enter adolescence. Her oldest, Marcelo, was born without healthy legs and has lived a life without walking. His original mother was unwilling to come to terms with the birth defect and Reyna was quick to adopt him as her own. Marcelo is a beacon of light with immense inner peace and contentment. He'll teach you something new every time you're with him.
The four of them live in a small 15x20ft brick house and use an outdoor kitchen (as seen below). The house itself remains in poor shape with decaying wooden framing, dirt floors, and heavy water exposure during the rainy season.
Reyna works every day, not only as a mother of three but also as an expert basket weaver. Times are very rough in Nicaragua and the demand / cliental for her products has fallen sharply. Between Marcelo's monthly medical expenses and keeping the family fed, home improvement is not an option.
That's where we come in!
Upon my recent return to the community, I've given what money I can in order to construct a new kitchen for the family. With the help of local builders, we've began the process and should have this phase complete within the coming week! You can see our beginning progress in the photo below and I'll keep the updates flowing :)
Though this is only a start, I wish for her to have an "extreme home make over". In addition to the new kitchen, concrete floors are needed along with a new housing frame and an outdoor patio.
$5000 could take most Nicaraguans years to earn as the country is very far behind most modern economies. As for Reyna's case, she may never have an opportunity to fortify her own nest. With all our help, we can create a secure and very well deserved living environment for her family.
