HELP. Building for Children fundraise for new well, Ethiopia
Donation protected
Hi, my name is David Mulrooney, I am a member of a charity Building for Children. We are a group of volunteers, from North East Galway, Roscommon, and Mayo. Since 2006, we have worked abroad, building and refurbishing children's accommodations in orphanages, hospitals and schools where the conditions were dreadful and in desperate need of attention.
As a group of volunteers, we give our time free of charge and no one receives any salary or monetary benefit for this work, all monies raised go directly to the cost of the project on hand. material s etc.
ALL THIS WORK DEPENDS ON FUNDRAISING
Our current project is in Sebeta blind school, Ethiopia. phase 1, pre-covid 2019, we built a new dormitory from start to finish for 26 blind/visually impaired girls, these girls were renting rooms in unsafe conditions in Sebeta town, They were aged 13 - 17 . They now have the comfort of a new dormitory in the safety of the school compound,
January 2023 Phase 2, involved the renovation of 2 of the 6 existing dormitories, each home to 40 blind/visually impaired children, These dormitories were in horrific conditions- The stench was appalling - no working sanitation, - sewage on bedroom floors. -broken beds,- some with no mattresses, -children sleeping on the floor, - broken doors, windows, they now have two functioning bathrooms with showers, toilets, sinks, new beds, bed linen, doors, lockers, with a fresh coat of paint.
January 2024, Phase 3 - 2 more dormitories were renovated to the same standard, we also created an indoor playroom, equipped with sensory games and toys, we equipped a basic first aid room, we supplied a deep well water pump and 3 buffer water tanks to back up water supply. As part of our luggage allowance we brought clothes, this was such a delight. the queue formed early outside. The excitement for the new clothes, as they only have rags.
January 2025. Phase 4. We are traveling again to Sebeta, we intend to renovate the 2 remaining dormitories. upgrade the kitchen build a new shower block for students, that no longer live at the school but have no other facilities available for personal use.
However we just discovered last month to our utter dismay. The well in the school grounds has run dry. resulting in no water supply. This is massive challenge, for the group, at this late stage of planning our work for January 2025. we now need to factor the cost of drilling a new well in the school grounds. we are hosting fundraising events locally, As a group of volunteers we are working very hard to raise money. I am appealing for help with this fundraising to continue our work in Sebeta.
Every cent raised goes to the project. Our aim, with your help is to provide a safe comfortable home for the 300 children currently living in Sebeta blind school
