Building a hall space for the Buca School in Fiji
Donation protected
Overview
In summer 2019, I will be volunteering for 4 weeks with CAUKIN Studio designing and building an assembly hall space for Nasavusavu District (Buca) School located near Savusavu, Fiji.
Currently the children assemble twice a day in the school fields, and are exposed to hot temperatures and direct sunlight or pouring rain and cold winds. In turn, the children’s learning is being affected with many often falling sick or fainting.

Wider Benefits
This new assembly space will not only provide shelter for the children and teachers to gather every morning and afternoon but it is an opportunity to implement other uses such as:
- School celebrations and graduation ceremonies
- Annual general meeting and fire assembly point
- Teacher training and teacher workshops
- A place for the children to eat their lunches
- Additional teaching spaces
- Performances and indoor sports
The collaborative approach taken by CAUKIN studio will also mean that the community involved in this project will gain highly valuable skills in construction and design which they can take into the future to aid them when building other facilities or even their own homes.

The Buca School were amongst the many people affected by the most devastating Cyclone in recent history in 2016; destroying homes, schools, crops, and much more. With the perseverance and effort from local workers the school was fortunately reconstructed. However, the children, teachers and parents have been wanting an assembly space such as this for well over 10 years in order to prevent any unnecessary illness and aid in the children’s learning.
This project will inspire the people to take back some of what they have lost while also developing skills that will help them build structures that can better withstand cyclones in the future.

Costs
I will need to raise £3500 before the project start date (12th July), in order to fund the costs involved in the project: construction operations, tools, transport, materials, training, legal advice and insurance, accommodation, food etc.

I am a strong believer in the importance of education for all children worldwide and am passionate about the effects that these projects have on whole communities for many years to come. Any support given to me on this journey would be amazing, be it a donation however small, or sharing my campaign on Facebook, it will mean the world to me!
