Help Build the Wall! (school walls in Benin)

With the current obsession with building walls, I thought this would be the perfect time to start this campaign to help my Beninese friend Nestor raise money to build walls for the school he started in his village. Currently the school has only temporary walls made of palm branches.
Nestor is a friend of mine from the Peace Corps in Benin, West Africa when I was there from 1995-1997. He saw a need to help educate children from his village because the public schools are not well run, are overcrowded and are six miles from his village. To meet this need he opened his own private school in his village of Ayou last September. Last June I did a Go Fund Me campaign to raise money to buy student desks and tables for the school because he did not have enough of them. Thanks to your generosity we were able to raise $998 that he requested and he was able to purchase all the desks and benches he needed. Now, six months later he has had a lot of success and he’s requesting funding to upgrade one of his temporary classrooms that have walls made of palm branches that you can see in the photos. The palm branch walls allow the rain in and when there’s wind and the students cannot learn. Nestor is requesting $2,837 to build walls made of brick to create a permanent classroom where students can learn even if there is wind and rain. Below is a translation of his request and I’m also providing some of the recent photos he sent me from his school. We are an elementary school called “La Grace d’Allada,” and we are requesting aid in the reconstruction of a classroom using permanent materials.
Who are we?
We are a private school in Benin for students in difficult situations (orphans and poor children) and we assure that they are educated.
How?
“Educating a child, saves the world.” Even though we are in 2018, all parents are not able to send their children to school and the only other schools are 6 miles away.
Back to school numbers:
This year the school year started on September 17th, 2018, the date determined by the Beninese government. We got off to a good start with four teachers and 85 students of which 52 are girls and 33 are boys.
Why the request?
We are currently in temporary classrooms because the walls are made of straw (and palm branches). This creates some difficulties, above all when it rains. The water gets in the classrooms, when the rain is accompanied by wind. This being the case, we teach the children in difficult conditions. Just last week we there was a violent rainstorm that lasted two hours and we were forced to gather all the children in a classroom and prayed to God until the end of the rain.
We would really like to have several classrooms with brick walls, but if we can have one classroom this year that would help a lot. If we had one classroom with brick walls, we could gather all the children in that classroom when it rains. “Slowly but surely we will make progress.”
We aim to make the world better where children and young people will live happy, and later on will be able to take care of themselves and contribute much to the development of their nation.
The story of some children and their families:
Our school does charity work in the place where children are in difficult situations. I was helped by generous people to get an education. Now I’m giving back to children in a similar situation.
We are committed to providing eight hours of studies for the children each workday and we also insure that they eat.
Some families give us corn and beans from time to time and we cook them for the children. The whole village likes what we’re doing and encourages us.
What they’re learning:
We’re teaching exactly the same curriculum as in the public schools. Next school year we will have some of our students take the first high school exam. The advantage we offer is that we don’t have overcrowded classrooms as is the case in the public schools which is better because in the public schools there can have as many as 80 students in a classroom.
What they’re saying about my school:
My whole village is happy about my school. We have introduced English to our students. We have recruited an English teacher who teaches greetings, poetry, songs and other topics. My students speak English which is not usually the case in the public schools. The village is very happy and helps us with small tasks.

So far this school year:
All my teachers and students are happy and thank all the people who donated to the school earlier this year. We have three classrooms. We thank all our friends who helped us purchase 20 student tables and benches in September. All my students are very appreciative and thank you immensely.

" éduquer un enfant, c'est sauver le monde".Bien que nous somme en
2018 tous les parents n'ont pas la capacité d’envoyer leurs enfants à l’école et encore les écoles sont environ 10 km.
Point de la rentrée
Cette année l’école scolaire a démarré le 17 septembre 2018 date fixé par le gouvernement beninois. Nous avons bien démarré la rentrée avec 4 enseignants et 85 élevés dont 52 filles et 33 garçons..
Pourquoi de la demande?
Nous sommes toujours dans les constructions où les murs sont en pailles.Cela nous crée assez de difficultés surtout quand il pleut.L'eau pénètre la salle surtout si c'est une pluie accompagnés du vent.Etant donné que nous encadrons des enfants la conditions de travail nous ait très difficile.Par plus tard la semaine passé il y a une pluie violente qui a durée 2 heures nous sommes obligé de rassembler tous les enfants dans une salle et on prière DIEU jusqu'à la fin de cette pluie.
En réalité nous voulons des classes en mur mais si nous pouvons avoir une salle en mur cette année cela nous arrangeraient et dès qu' aura pluie on pourra rassembler tous les enfants dans cette salles.C'est "petit-à-petit l'oiseau fait son ni"
Réaliser un monde meilleur où les enfants,les jeunes vivront heureux,pourront se prendre en charge et contribuer efficacement au développement de leur nation.
Histoire de quelques enfants et leur famille
Notre école fait un travail bénévolat à l'endroit des enfants en situation difficile. Etant donné que moi j'ai été aidé par des personnes de bonnes volontés dans mes éducations je le fait en retour aux enfants dans les conditions pareilles.
Nous sommes obligé de garder les enfants pour 8 heures d'études chaque jour ouvrable nous assurons leur mangé.
Il y a cette famille qui nous donne par moment des maïs,haricots,... et nous préparons aux enfants.Tout le village aime ce que nous faisons et nous encourage
Qu'est-ce qu'ils apprennent
Nous exécutons exactement les même programme d'étude que les élèves d'une école publique,belle information l’année scolaire prochaine nous présenterons nos élèves au premier examen du lycée.L'avantage ici c'est que nous ne mettons par beaucoup d’élève dans une salle donc le travail est meilleur chez nous par contre dans les ecoles publiques c'est au moins 80 élèves par salle.
Qu'est qu'ils disent de mon école
Tout mon village est content de mon école. Nous avons introduit l'anglais dans
l’éducation de nos élèves dans notre école.Nous avons recruté un professeur d'anglais qui vient enseigner l'anglais( salutation,poésie,chanson et autres ) à mes élevés. Mes élèves parlent l'anglais ce qui n'est pas régulier dans les écoles publiques.Le village est très content et ils nous aident dans les travaux de sucrages et autres.
