Help Nestor fund student desks for a small village school in Benin, West Africa
In Benin school class sizes are as large as 85 students! There was recently a teacher strike that closed school for three months and the nearest elementary school is six miles away from the village of Ayou! For these reasons Nestor built and started his own primary school in his village. He’s a teacher himself and is looking for funding to buy more student desks. Can you help?

I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Benin, West Africa from 1995-1997 and I met my neighbor Nestor when he was only 11 years old. He is from a very poor family so after I left Benin I fundraised for him, and I was able to put him through college through the sales of my Discovering Benin DVD and with the help of many generous donors.
Unfortunately today he has only been able to find a job as a substitute teacher because of the poor job market and people who get jobs in Benin have to have connections. Because he comes from a poor family, he doesn’t have those connections.
Nestor has taken the initiative to start his own school in his village as a response to class sizes of up to 85 students and a recent three month teacher strike. He’s also serving the needs of the children in his village, Ayou, saving them from a 6 mile walk to the nearest school.
Who Are We?:
By Nestor Djossou (Ayou, Benin, West Africa):
We are a private elementary school for students from age 5-13, called “La Grace d’Allada” or “The Grace of Allada” in Benin. The school is for children in difficult situations (orphans and others). We assure that they will get an education. We are asking for help to buy student desks and possibly build another classroom. The school will opening in September. Nestor has four teachers, there are two classrooms and 64 students enrolled already. The tuition is only $55 a year for the parents who can afford it.
How?:
“Educating a child is to save the world.” Even though it is 2018, all parents in Ayou are not able to send their children to school and schools are 6 miles away. This year the public schools had a three month strike and the classes are overcrowded (85 students per class). We don’t have more than 32 student per class.
Why?:
Creating a better world where the children and young people will live happily, will be able to take charge and contribute to the development of their nation.
