What is the Southside Community Garden?
The Southside Community Garden is a network of home gardeners, partners, and organizers who share a passion and commitment for growing vegetables, learning sustainability, and promoting justice through food.

Through community support and solidarity, garden materials are provided at no cost to home gardeners in the 76104 zip code of Fort Worth, TX. Home gardeners are the primary caretaker of their garden, and keep the food they grow. Partners donate their time and gardening expertise throughout the growing season to support home gardeners in the learning process.

About the neighborhood*
-Did you know that 76104 is the zip code with the lowest life expectancy in Texas? While the state average is 78.5 years, the average for 76104 is 66.7.
-If you want to buy fresh produce or unprocessed food in 76104, your options are limited. A 2013 study identifies this area as a food desert.
-While food deserts and poverty contribute to the low life expectancy of the area, police brutality is also responsible for lives lost too soon. Atatiana Jefferson was murdered by Fort Worth Police on October 12, 2019. A mural in her memory stands across the street from the Southside Community Garden.
-The area identifies 38% Black, 43% Hispanic, 15% white, 2% Asian, 1% multiple ethnicities, with a median age of 30.5.

Mission and Mindset:
-We focus on restoring the relationship between food consumption and food growing.
-“Teach to fish” philosophy: We focus on the learning process, with each household gardening from seedling to whole tomato.
-Access to healthy food is a right; knowing how to grow food is one path.
-Racism directly impacts the health and diet of Black and brown people worldwide; food autonomy is a vital part of justice.

“To all of the supporters of the Southside Community Garden- We cannot thank you enough! Your contributions make it possible to create home gardens in our hometown. We are a network, and every donor, volunteer, and home gardener is invaluable to the Southside Community Garden.” -SCG Team
