Build homes, support indigenous Oaxacan community
Donation protected
Hi! I'm Luis Martinez from Tequio foods.
Tequio Foods sources our heirloom corn from many indigenous villages throughout Oaxaca. One of those villages is Matagallinas, an agricultural, indigenous Mixe village with 3,000 people, many of whom speak only their indigenous language and are almost completely self-sufficient. On March 28, Matagallinas was ravaged by a devastating storm that destroyed more than 10 homes and 10 families’ crops. Just as families are starting to find their way through the chaos, the village is now facing Hurricane Agatha, threatening to make the village relive its trauma. Matagallinas relies on their agricultural production and, without it, must break up their families to travel to the city or even to the United States for income in order to make ends meet.
For many Americans, $10 is the cost of coffee and a pastry; $50 is the cost of a standard dinner out; $100 might be the household alcohol budget for a few weeks. For people in Matagallinas, $10 is the week’s income; $50 will buy a new water tank; $100 will completely replace a roof and give safe housing to an entire family.
Please consider supporting the people who provide your favorite chef and restaurant with the highest quality heirloom corn that you enjoy during your weekly dinner out. Donate any amount and help our farmers recover from this catastrophic event. The GoFundMe account will run through June 7 and all money raised will go directly to support the families who have been so drastically affected by this storm as well as those preparing for Hurricane Agatha.
