I am trying to raise enough money to cover a kitchen remodel project in a kids Shelter where I volunteer in the city of Irapuato, Mexico.
The residents of the shelter are male children between 6 and 16 years old with serious problems of family disintegration. Depending on their particular situation, some of the kids may stay there for only weeks or months or it could be for up to years. There are a number of reasons that they boys arrive to this shelter; they may have been abandoned, outcast, orphaned, have suffered violence, physical or sexual abuse or their family lives in extreme poverty and are not able to take care of their basic needs. The shelter is currently home to 16 minors and has a capacity of 30.
The current kitchen in the shelter is extremely run-down and not very functional.
We want to remodel the kitchen completely and thus improve the standard of living of our boys. The goal is to make it a place where they can they, along with the staff and volunteers of the shelter can enjoy their meals in the same way we would in our own homes.
The original stucture of the building will not be demolished but the project will include:
new tile flooring
new kitchen appliances like a fridge and oven
new durable kitchen cabinets
repainting the inside and outside
new roofing
new windows
adding on an outdoor terrace with tables and chairs
new dining tables and chairs for indoors and outdoors
new cutlery and kitchenware
build a pantry to store food
In Mexico we will be looking for donations of some of the materials however we will need to pay for the labour and anything that is not donated. We have estimated it will cost 80,000 Mexican Pesos which is approximately 4000euro.
If there is any money left over it will go straight into the Shelter's fund to pay for future projects like a recreational room and/or towards buying food, clothing, medicine (etc) for the boys.
