Hi, my name is Kristin and I am working with Sue Sandle who was awarded the British Empire Medal by the Queen of England for Sue's many years of working to better the lives of disadvantaged children on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. We are asking for your compassion and help for eight year-old Ronel Louis. This little boy is blind, and cannot walk, talk or do anything for himself. He is looked after and very much loved by his father Ronnie in their one room house in Saint Lucia (see pictures below). Ronnie actually has two children; his wife has left taking one child, leaving Ronnie as the sole caregiver for Ronel.
Ronnie is a part-time laborer on construction projects. When he is at work, he has to leave Ronel in his bed alone for hours which he finds absolutely devastating. Social Services will not provide a caregiver as the house does not have a bathroom. There is an outside cesspit and uncovered shower. Inside there is no sink, no cupboard and dishes are washed in a bucket.
THE PLAN
The house is riddled with termites, is structurally unsound and will be demolished. It will be replaced with a house suitable for Ronel which will get him the help he desperately needs from Social Services. We will build a wheel chair accessible shower and a toilet and sink suitable for Ronel's needs.
Most of the money will be spent on materials as we try to use volunteer labor. Home-aid is headed by Andy de Verteuil who has prepared the plans and specifications (see plan below). There are no paid staff; we are all volunteers.
We are ready to go! Please help us help Ronel and his loving father!
