My name is Jordan Stern, and I’m a 17-year-old Life Scout with Troop 64. For my Eagle Scout project, I’m raising funds to build organic raised garden beds for the Cancer Wellness Center in Northbrook. I chose this project because the Center’s mission means a lot to me. They work every day to support anyone touched by cancer by offering programs that help people find comfort, strength, and community. Everything they offer—support groups, wellness programs, therapeutic services, movement classes, nutrition programs, and more—is completely free to the participants.

The Center’s current garden is broken down and in desperate need of renovation. My goal is to expand what this outdoor space can do by adding raised beds filled with organic soil so that fresh organic produce can be grown right on-site. This isn’t just about gardening; it directly supports one of the Center’s most meaningful programs: their cooking and nutrition classes for cancer patients and their families. Fresh, whole ingredients make a real difference for people in treatment and recovery, and being able to grow those ingredients in a healing environment adds another layer of connection and empowerment.

The produce from these garden beds will be used in the Center’s cooking classes to help participants learn how to prepare meals that support both physical health and emotional well-being. These classes are more than just lessons—they help people regain a sense of control, learn new skills, and share time with others who understand what they’re going through. By building this garden, I hope to give them a steady source of organic, healthy foods while strengthening the community around the Center.

The funds I’m raising will go toward purchasing metal planters, and filling them with high-quality organic soil so the garden can thrive for years to come. Once everything is funded, I’ll be organizing volunteers, including fellow Scouts, to build and plant the beds at the Center.

Reaching Eagle Scout is important to me, but what matters even more is creating something that genuinely helps people who are facing one of the hardest challenges of their lives. This garden will continue providing comfort, nourishment, and healing long after the project is complete.
