The Story: From Survival to Legacy
My name is Rikk Utas,, and I am a survivor.
Like many gay men of my generation, the 1980s and 90s were a battlefield. I watched my community vanish. I lived through a decade where I looked around and realised there was no man left in my life who had known me for longer than five years. The "biological" safety net was gone, and the "chosen" one had been decimated by the AIDS crisis.
For years, many of us survived by being fiercely self-reliant. But as we age, we face a new challenge: The Longevity Gap. Who will be there for us when we can no longer do it all alone? Why should we have to return to the closet to live in assisted care housing?
Today, I live in Mexico with my husband and our partner. We have found more than just sunshine here; we have found the space to rebuild. Now, we want to offer that same opportunity to our brothers.
The Vision: Refugio Dorado (The Golden Refuge)
We are founding Refugio Dorado, a first-of-its-kind "Chosen Family" compound in the heart of Jalisco, Mexico. This isn't a clinical nursing home—it is an autonomous, eco-smart sanctuary designed for LGBTQ+ elders.
By pooling our resources in Mexico, we are creating a lifestyle of dignity that is becoming impossible to afford in the US, Canada, or Europe.
Our 40-unit sanctuary will feature:
• 24/7 Professional Care: A dedicated on-site resident care team and a "buddy system" to ensure no one is ever truly alone.
• Total Autonomy: High-capacity solar power and medical-grade water purification. We won't be at the mercy of rising utility costs.
• Innovative Housing: "Golden Brother" suites (2B/2B) designed for friends to age together as roommates, sharing costs and support.
• Radical Sustainability: Grey-water recycling for lush communal gardens and edible rooftop farms.
