My name is Bryce and I am a 16 year old Boy Scout in San Diego, CA, Troop 324. I started in Cub Scouts 10 years ago with Boy Scouts of America and I am working on my Eagle Scout Project. When I was thinking about what to do for my project, I decided to look around in my own neighborhood for ideas of how I could help. My troop did a service project at the local school, Gage Elementary, San Diego. We emptied out a classroom full of thousands of books. They were being donated to another school! That gave me an idea. How could we make these books available for THIS school's community!? A Little Free Library right at the school! Over the next couple years, I accepted hundreds of donated books and saved them in my shed, waiting to complete my project. Well, the corona virus put those plans on hold. Instead of waiting, we put the 15 tubs of books that were in the shed, right out front of my house. My mom posted it on Facebook and every book was adopted in about a week! Hundreds of people came by, from as far as 30 minutes away! It was a wonderful feeling to know hundreds of kids were reading!
I am ready to start building a Little Free Library for Gage Elementary School. Gage is a Title 1 school, which means students receive free or reduced lunch. Many students may not have access to the library and need books at home! The principal is excited to have a place for the community to share the gift of literacy!
The cost of the Library kit, shipping, taxes, registration with the official Little Free Library non-profit, and plaque is about $570. I am also going to need about $50 to feed my fellow scouts who are going to help me build. The rest is for the paint, brushes, sandpaper, etc... Would you consider supporting both a Boy Scout and childhood literacy for ALL students? Thank you for your time and consideration!
