Brother To All: Help Sikandar Find Freedom

Sikandar has been living as a refugee since he was two years old. Born in Afghanistan, his family fled violence when he was a young child, moving him and his family to Pakistan. There, Sikandar survived two terrorist attacks targeted at Hazaras, the minority ethnic group to which he belongs. Two of his friends died in the attacks. To save his life, his parents helped him to flee again, this time to Indonesia.

Seeking to overcome the trauma of his past, Sikandar has devoted himself to helping others, his fellow refugees in Indonesia. He is the principal of the Refugee Learning Center, where he says, “I found friends, colleagues, purpose, and hope.” At the school, the students call him “bhai” or “brother to all.”

However, Indonesia can never be Sikandar's true home. Refugees in Indonesia are not allowed by the government to formally work or go to school, and have to endure poor living conditions. Sikandar's only path forward is to seek settlement in another country. As Sikandar’s father tragically passed away in June this year, and the stress that marked his initial time as a refugee in Indonesia has returned, it is time for Sikandar to come to Canada.  

We are fundraising to bring Sikandar to his new home through the Canadian government's private sponsorship program (https://www.northernlightscanada.net/resources/guide-to-private-sponsorship). All of the funds raised will be used to support Sikandar's first year in Canada, including rent, food, clothing, furniture, and all other living expenses, as he transitions to self-sufficiency. Once we have reached our target funds, we can begin the paperwork process with the Canadian government to bring Sikandar to beautiful British Columbia. Sikandar is a talented person – an IT professional, a school principal, a humanitarian. But he needs your help to start a new life.
