The Brookland Manor/Brentwood Village Residents Association needs our help raising money for campaign t-shirts! We can help them win!
For years, residents at Brookland Manor, a historically black neighborhood, have been targeted for displacement by Mid-City Financial's planned "RIA" redevelopment. Their Residents Association is organizing to protect homes and families by advocating for the preservation of 535 units of affordable housing for their community as part of the redevelopment, as well as, fighting against the displacement tactics employed against them by wealthy developer Mid-City. Many residents and families have lived at Brookland Manor for decades, but in recent years, they have found themselves the target of harassment by security companies (hired by Mid-City) and Edgewood Management (sister company to Mid-City) who have served tenants with infraction notices for things like sitting outside and talking to their neighbors. Fences and gates have been erected across the property, restricting the movement of residents in their own neighborhood. Additionally, conditions on the property have been left to deteriorate, and rats are now rampant throughout the property, which is a healthy and safety concern for many children who play outside. This is immoral. It is unconscionable. It has to stop!
"MidCity Development has attempted to engage in a campaign to reduce the number of tenants living at Brookland Manor, so that there would be fewer tenants to fight as they try to gentrify the area. The residency at Brookland Manor declined from 503 to 438 occupied units. (A Washington Post investigation from 2016 found that MidCity sued to evict residents about 370 times between January 2014 and March 2016.)" -Washington City Paper
