The ask is for donations of $4,000 to cover the cost of purchasing two convertible refrigerator/freezers by the Brookfield Community Food Cupboard. The Cupboard is in and serves the students and neighbours of the Brookfield High School in Ottawa, Ontario. Its 125 dedicated volunteers are students of the school and from surrounding neighbourhoods.
The Cupboard was created to ease food insecurity in Brookfield and neighbouring schools found to be as high as 70 percent of students and their families. After two years of operation the Cupboard now provides about 840 meals for a day each week of donated and purchased non-perishable foods.
To enrich these meals the Cupboard is receiving Increasingly donations of perishables, like baked goods, fruits and vegetables, often in large quantities. Therein is the requirement for refrigeration.
Particularly spring through autumn, more perishables are donated than can be distributed on a day, such that they must be refrigerated. And it is never known whether it might be for the freezing of baked goods and/or the cooling of fruits, for examples. That is why the Cupboard plans to purchase two appliances that can operate as either fridges or freezers - it can readily adapt to weekly situations.
GoFundMe donations of $4,000 would swing the purchase of the two appliances. Donations in excess of the ask will be used to purchase food.
