The Bristol Hearing Voices Network is a self-help group for people who hear voices, have intrusive thoughts or other unusual experiences - some of the most marginalised individuals in our community. The group keeps people safe, and out of the psychiatric hospital system, by supporting members to help themselves and others.
There are many voice hearers in the Bristol area. These are people who hear voices or have unusual beliefs, many have been in and out of the mental health system all their lives and have diagnoses such as psychosis, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
Voice hearers often experience great stigma and high levels of social and economic marginalisation. Mental health services are over-stretched, and voice hearers are often seen as difficult to engage - until it’s too late and they’ve been hospitalised.
The solution to the social isolation, mental distress and alienation that comes with being different in this way is a strong social network comprised of people who understand you. Being able to talk to others about what is acutely difficult can be the difference between life and death.
The Bristol Hearing Voices network is a place where people with intrusive psychotic experiences can find support and friendship. We hold weekly open meetings that are well attended - providing a social hub for those who come - and a space where people can talk freely about their experiences. There is nowhere else like this. Regular attendees break the cycle of hospitalisation - the group helps them find something to live for.
