Bringing Wheelchairs & Hope to Children & Families in Uganda

Donation protected

In February 2026, I will be travelling to Kumi, Eastern Uganda, as a volunteer physiotherapist with the wonderful charity Kumi Community Foundation (KCF). The mission is simple but life-changing: to provide children and adults living with disabilities in extremely impoverished rural communities with the mobility equipment, support, and dignity they deserve.

Why This Matters

KCF was founded in 2002 and has since supported thousands of individuals living with disabilities, malnourishment, and poverty in some of the most remote areas of Uganda. This year, thanks to a partnership with PhysioNet, a 40ft shipping container filled with donated wheelchairs, walking aids, and essential equipment has been sent from the UK to Kumi Hospital.

When we arrive in Uganda, we will work alongside local clinicians, volunteers, and hospital staff to:

  • Distribute over 100 wheelchairs and many more walking aids to those in desperate need.
  • Support children and adults who previously received wheelchairs, ensuring their equipment is still suitable as they grow and their needs change.
  • Mentor and train local teams, so they can continue to fit, adjust, and repair wheelchairs sustainably long after we leave.
  • Create custom postural supports with the help of a local seamstress, so that children with complex needs can sit safely and comfortably.

This project is not just about delivering equipment—it’s about restoring independence, mobility, and dignity to people who otherwise have very limited opportunities to move freely, attend school, or participate in their communities.

More Than Just Wheelchairs

Life in Kumi is about survival, and the need goes far beyond mobility aids. The charity also provides medical intervention, orthotics (including supplying artificial limbs), physiotherapy, nutrition care, access to education and training… Families are grateful for even the basics such as:

  • Socks to wear with the orthotics
  • Underwear and clothing
  • Reusable sanitary products
  • Blankets and basic stationery for schoolchildren
  • Medical equipment

These small things make a huge difference in daily life.

Why I’m Going

Many of you know that I grew up in Africa (a little further south!) and it has always held a special place in my heart. While I love working with children and families here in the UK, I feel both humbled and honoured to share my skills with communities who have so much less.

This trip isn’t about me—it’s about standing alongside the incredible local families and volunteers in Uganda, and helping KCF to make sure their work can continue long into the future.

How You Can Help

As a small charity, KCF relies entirely on volunteers. We are each responsible for funding our own flights, accommodation, food, and in-country costs.

That’s why I am asking for your support.

  • Every donation, big or small, makes a difference.
  • Funds raised will go directly towards covering the cost of my trip so I can be part of this vital project.
  • Any additional funds raised will be donated straight back to KCF, supporting their ongoing work with follow-up care, equipment repairs, and replacements for those who rely on them.

Join Me in Making a Difference

Please consider supporting this cause if you can—whether through a donation, sharing this page, or simply spreading the word. I’ll be sharing updates throughout the trip so you can see exactly how your support is changing lives in real time.

Together, we can make a lasting impact for children and families in Uganda.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤️
