Bringing Hope to a Refugee Family

Donation protected

Srishti Foundation , a registered not for profit organization, in London, ON, Canada, has just helped a refugee family from Nepal to resettle in London, ON, Canada, under the “Group of 5 Refugee Sponsorship Program” of the Federal Government of Canada.

A saga of 17 harrowing years,  of misery, of enduring physical torture, hopelessness, losing everything they have ever had, on the run with only their lives from a civil war and later just about surviving in a refugee camp, ended on 11th September 2019.

At the end of our 2.5 year long refugee sponsorship process in Thailand, the Limbu family landed  at Pearson International Airport, Toronto, Canada on September 11th 2019, to start a new life of hope, future and respect, as Permanent Residents of Canada.

Under this private refugee sponsorship program, refugees do not qualify for any government assistance,  in Canada. We are hence raising funds to help this family find their feet and settle down, during their initial months in Canada. This will offer anyone who is interested to contribute, an opportunity to bring hope to this traumatized family.

The Limbu Family's Story:

The  Limbu family (comprising husband wife and two sons) were forced to flee the violent Civil War in Nepal during the previous decade . They were among the innocents caught in the crossfire in the brutal war between the Nepalese Army and the Rebel Maoists. Dilliswor was suspected and physically tortured by one and put on a “Death List” by the other, leaving him with no option to flee his village and plan his exit from Nepal, to get away from the dragnet of informers and executors of that “Death List”. First they lost their small business, overnight they lost their home and everything they had worked for and known in their lives. After remaining in hiding for a year or so, they managed to leave Nepal with help of a few good friends and family members.

Arriving in Bangkok, Thailand, in September 2005, they registered with UNHCR as refugees. Since then living in a refugee camp in Thailand with no rights to work legally or with no access to schools for their children, the going has been rough to try and make two ends meet or survive. After a few years when the civil war in Nepal ended, their UNHCR hand outs/ benefits ended too. This made conditions for them worse. Returning to Nepal was and is not an option. Dilliswor remains on the hit list of one of the sides who have access to political power in Nepal and are known for their revengeful ways.

Unable to return to Nepal and with no help from UNHCR for resettlement in a third country, they were forced to remain as refugees in Thailand.  They live on the grace and goodwill of Samaritans in Bangkok. Their children are growing up uneducated as their access to schools ended when their UNHCR benefits ended. As if this was not bad enough, certain religious organizations offered to resettle them in a Western country, if they traded their native faith in return. They refused to comply – and have since been stuck in limbo for the last 6 years, with no one to turn to for help.

The details of their journey and harrowing experience over the last 17 years is heartbreaking. It goes into many pages and justice cannot to be served, by trying to cover it in entirety, in a single webpage. Contact Us  for more details.

How will your donations be used:

100% of donations received by Srishti Foundation,  will be transferred to the Limbu family's chequing account.

As they find their feet in a new country and find employment, your donations will help the Limbu family pay for part of their:
- living expenses (rent and groceries).
- buying essentials (clothes, basic utensils, furniture etc)
- back to school supplies for their children.
- training to be employable at the earliest in Canada.
- transportation &  bus fares.

Funds will be disbursed to the family directly into their bank account in Canada.

All donors will receive a detailed report of funds collected and disbursed to the Limbu family with adequate documentation to support it. All donors will also have an opportunity meet the Limbu family and hear and experience their appreciation directly, in person, right here in Canada.

We cannot erase what this family has gone through. However your donation to a family who has gone through terrible experiences of all sorts for the last 17 years will help them settle down quicker, help them get into the workforce quicker and remind them human values and empathy still exists in the world.
