Bringing pop up Hair Colouring to Galiwin'ku - Unicorn Manes

Donation protected
We would first like to acknowledge the Yolngu people of Galiwin'ku- their elders past and present, and thank them for welcoming us onto their country.
I am Mykey O'Halloran, from my salon Unicorn Manes in Naarm ( Melbourne Australia). We are fundraising for the travel expenses to travel and volunteer doing hair for a week in East Arnhemland, in the Northern Territory.

Over the Easter holidays, from Good Friday onwards, myself, another hairdresser Bri and our cross-cultural project manager Sarpa will be returning to Galiwin'ku. We have gone up there at Easter time annualy , this will be the third time, and this was an invitation by Galiwin'ku Womens Space , a Yolngu led orgamisation supporting women, families and community wellbeing.

We have been invited back by community because the work has been meaningful and wantred in community.

What our Bush Salon is: A FREE pop up hair salon on country for community in Galiwin'ku. Its a place for colour, care, pride, and self-expression. We offer haircuts, hair colour including bleaching and dying hair vibrant colours, and styling. We do this in a way that is safe, welcoming and most importantly culturally respective.

Our work is for the whole community, Sistagirls, Brothaboys, Pride Family, Elders, young people, boys, girls, men, anyone in the community who wants to come. We work with consent and alongside local Yolgnu staff and leaders.

In 2025 we connected with 220 community members over 6 x 10 hour salon days. We saw people walking out feeling proud, seen, and confident.
One participant said " It wasnt just a hair colour, it was like being seen for the first time in a long time."
Another said : " I feel better about myself, Its lifted my self esteem, I dont want the colours to fade out"

The fundraiser is to cover our flight and accommodation costs, we are not working for a wage it is 100% voluntary on our behalf. All services to the community are free of charge, so the donations simply get us there for the week to make it possible.

Our goal is $12,000 for flights & accommodation for the team, and small community stipends and materials.

We work from a stregnths based, cultrually respectful aproach. This project is led by community priorities and is guided by Yolgnu voices. Its about walking alongside community.

If you CAN donate, any amount that youre comfortable with, share or support in any way , we would be so greatful. Every dollar raised helps us return to Galiwin'ku to comtinue this work each year.

Thank you to the Galiwin'ku womens space and the Yolngu community for trusting us again. Thank you to everyone who helps make this possible.
