Hello everyone,
On 17 April 2025, our much-loved dad/father-in-law Rakesh suffered a haemorrhagic stroke. Lying on the floor, he managed to ring my wife, Madison, who called an ambulance straight away. The bleed has been deemed inoperable by his surgeons, and he lost movement in his right arm and leg and was left unable to speak.
Nearly two months of specialist rehabilitation have worked wonders: his words are coming back and he can now stand with help. Doctors feel he could leave hospital in three to four weeks — but only if his home is safe.
Why his home isn’t safe
Rakesh has lived alone for nine years. Unbeknown to us, he was struggling with his mental health and was repeatedly preyed upon by cowboy builders and electricians. Since his stroke, Madison and I have poured our hearts – and nearly £20,000 of our savings – into putting things right.
Just some of the issues we’ve faced:
- Numerous leaking pipes.
- Rotten floors ripped back to the bare concrete, with some re-concreted.
- collapsing ceilings replaced.
- numerous holes re-plastered.
- every inch of laid flooring removed, levelled and relaid with proper flooring.
- industrial mould treatment and a full deep-clean by a professional company.
Just when we thought we could finally exhale, a qualified electrician that we trust has inspected the house on what we thought were minor issues. After two hours he cut the mains power, declaring the wiring an immediate fire risk with various threat to life issues, and has advised that the safest thing to do is a full re-wire before anyone can live there.
The lowest quote is £10,700. Our savings are exhausted, and the hospital cannot discharge Rakesh to a house without power. He is making good progress and longs to be back in familiar surroundings with family support.
How you can help
We’re asking for £11,000 to cover:
- Full re-wiring and electrical certification costs.
- Minor make-good works afterwards by a plasterer.
- Any GoFundMe fee’s.
Any contribution, no matter the size, will help us switch the lights back on and open Rakesh’s front door to him once again. If you’re not in a position to donate, a share would mean the world.
Thank you for taking the time to read and for any help you can spare.
Dan & Madison ❤️
