We’re Cheryl and John Navar, and we’ve been inspired by the incredible strength of children living with Type 1 Diabetes.
Every day, these kids face challenges most adults can’t imagine — finger sticks, sensors, insulin pumps, and the constant balancing act that comes with managing blood sugar — all while living with a lifetime of food restrictions that touch nearly every part of their day.
Yet they keep showing up with courage, joy, and smiles that could light up a room.
One day, Cheryl had an idea. As a pediatric diabetes educator and, avid Barbie collector, she wanted to find a way to bring these children a moment of joy — something that said,
“You’re strong. You’re seen. You’re not alone.”
That’s how the Breakthrough Barbie Bonanza was born.
When she discovered that Mattel had created a Barbie featuring a glucose monitor and insulin pump, she thought: What if every child living with Type 1 Diabetes could have one of these?
What started as one small idea has turned into a growing community movement. With the help of friends, family, and incredible supporters across the country, we’ve already rallied nearly 1,000 Barbies — and now we’re working to bring that same encouragement to even more children nationwide.

Our Goal
Our goal is to raise $100,000 to put a Breakthrough Barbie into the hands of every child living with Type 1 Diabetes that we can reach.
Each doll represents a breakthrough moment — a spark of confidence and connection that reminds every child that their diagnosis, their food restrictions, and their daily routines don’t limit their dreams, their imagination, or their joy.
Your donation helps us:
Purchase Barbies in bulk directly from Mattel or approved retailers
Cover shipping and packaging costs
Expand this effort to reach more families and children nationwide
And if we’re blessed enough to raise more than what’s needed for Barbies, every additional dollar will go toward other diabetic-themed toys, ensuring every child receives something special, no matter what’s left on the shelf. We are also hopeful that, once Mattel sees the support, that we can rally for a T1D Ken doll as well.

Why It Matters
Representation matters.
For a child managing a lifelong condition, seeing a doll that looks like them, complete with a glucose monitor or insulin pump, can make a world of difference. It turns something medical into something normal, even empowering.
Every dollar goes directly toward purchasing and distributing Barbies and diabetic-themed toys.
No overhead. No middlemen. Just real people coming together to bring joy to children who deserve it.
