Help Bring Jordan & Art’s Story to China — and Then Home
Why This Story Matters ...
“When my father passed away in 2023, no one mentioned his job title or even what he did for work ... they talked about his character, his integrity, and how he helped others.
But his story was never told.
This is our chance to change that, for ourselves, and for others like us.
It’s how we make sure our stories, our struggles, and our purpose are seen and remembered.”
What Is The Mat?
The Mat is a real-life documentary about struggle, second chances, and the quiet strength it takes to keep showing up — on the mat and in life.
It follows four men from different walks of life whose journeys converge through martial arts, mentorship, and community. Over the past year, we’ve filmed countless hours. Now, we’re heading to China to capture the final, most powerful chapter — where everything comes full circle.
Why We’re Raising Funds
We need to get to China to finish this story. It’s where Jordan — a Cuban immigrant, fighter, and proud Houston resident — finally gets his shot at redemption. And it’s where Art — a fellow Houstonian, lifelong martial artist, and respected coach — realizes a dream decades in the making.
We’ve worked hard to secure a rare opportunity: a chance for them to compete in JCK MMA, China’s premier fighting promotion. It will be the first time JCK welcomes U.S.-based athletes, and we’ll be there to document every moment.
Every dollar raised will go directly to travel costs — no fluff. Just the basics: airfare, visas, food, lodging, and local transportation.
Matching the First $5,000 Raised
To show how much this means to us, we’re personally matching the first $5,000 in donations.
That means your $100 becomes $200 — but only while the match lasts.
We’ve already invested our time, energy, and personal savings to bring this story to life. Now we’re doubling down to finish what we started.
Travel Budget Breakdown
We’re sending a lean six-person team: Two athletes, two cornermen, one coach, and one cameraman.
- Flights and Visas $2,500 x 6 = $15,000
- Lodging (10 days at $100/room) $6,000
- Meals ($30/day x 6 people) $1,800
- Ground Transportation and Miscellaneous $2,200
Total Goal: $25,000
Who You’re Supporting
Jordan
Once a homeless Cuban immigrant. Now, a business owner, community leader, and newly minted Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. This trip marks his shot at redemption—on the international stage where his past, present, and future collide.
Art
A lifelong coach and martial artist, Art has guided countless others toward discipline, healing, and purpose through the mat. A 3rd-degree BJJ black belt with nearly 25 years of experience, he now embarks on a long-awaited pilgrimage to the birthplace of martial arts.
Quang
A father and former corporate cog searching for meaning beyond the boardroom, through community and storytelling. I’m documenting this story because I believe it reflects something bigger than us all.
Vaughn
A Canadian who left home in his 20s to reconnect with his roots in Asia. There, he discovered martial arts — and it changed his life. Now, he’s building a gym and a legacy for himself, his son, and everyone who steps onto the mat.
