Phase 1 COMPLETE! Observatory Dome is Home! Help us Build the Base for the Universe
The Anglesey Astronomical Society has successfully completed the transport of the observatory and is now fundraising for the final build!
We have an incredible, positive update! The mission to bring a dedicated astronomical facility to Anglesey has reached a crucial milestone.
Due to unforeseen logistical challenges—namely the completion of the house sale in Little Neston, Wirral, and the difficulty in securing the road closure from Cheshire Council—we had to pivot our initial extraction plan.
Major Success: The Dome is on Anglesey!
The Anglesey Astronomical Society team successfully travelled to the Wirral to carefully dismantle the scope and cut the massive fiberglass dome (3.2m high, 3m round) into manageable sections.
We are thrilled to announce that the entire observatory and telescope have now been safely transported to Anglesey!
This success was only possible thanks to the immense generosity and support of local businesses:
A huge thank you to Hogan-Group (based in Bangor) for providing the necessary van and manpower for the extraction and transport! We are now working in close partnership with Hogan-Group as they kindly offer continued support with the project.
Thank you also to Rob Mills Daughters and Sons for their vital help with the trailer required for the move.
Our New Goal: Rebuild, Reconstruct, and ERECT!
Now that the dome is safely on the island, our mission shifts to the next ambitious phase.
Every single donation will now be put directly towards:
Reconstruction and Repair: Carefully repairing the cuts made to the fiberglass dome and reconstructing the telescope apparatus.
Erecting a Community Building: Our ultimate goal is to erect a dedicated building at the Holyhead Breakwater Park Education Field. This building will serve as the permanent base for the Anglesey Astronomical Society, allowing us to hold meetings, host workshops, and welcome community groups to use the observatory facility.
Community Impact: Why This Matters to Anglesey
This project is a game-changer for the community of Anglesey, giving us a dedicated facility to:
Inspire: Promote vital STEM education by running hands-on workshops for schools, colleges, and community groups across the island.
Engage: Host public viewing nights, giving everyone in the area—young and old—their first "Eyes on the Universe" under our local dark skies.
Future-proof: Secure a legacy for amateur astronomy in North Wales for years to come.
Our Sincere Gratitude
We must take a moment to express our deepest gratitude. Thank you to the entire community for your unwavering belief and generosity. The Holyhead Breakwater Park facility would not be possible without you!
A special thank you goes to the Holyhead Round Table and Holyhead Council for their incredible support in helping us secure the future of this project.
Now We Need Your Help to Build the Base!
The society is a constituted group funded primarily through grants, but these funds cannot support this type of large-scale construction, installation, and repair project.
Please help us continue this journey and make this historic facility a reality.
Here’s how you can help:
Donate: Every contribution, big or small, gets us closer to purchasing the materials for the new building and completing the dome reconstruction.
Share: Spread the word across social media and with friends—sharing is just as important as donating!
Volunteer: If you have practical skills (building, electrics, or logistics) for the installation phase on Anglesey, please contact us via our society channels.
Let’s turn this project into a permanent base for discovery at Holyhead Breakwater Park! Thank you for helping us give our island “Eyes on the Universe.”
