Bring Holiday Joy to Laurel House Families

My name is Kristen and I am a martial artist. As a precursor to the opportunity to earn my black belt, I am participating in a “Link in the Chain” project.

The purpose of the project is to pass on the knowledge I’ve learned through my martial arts journey. It could be highlighting my martial arts. It could also be through community service.

As a martial artist, we are always trying to better ourselves. One way we do this is by offering service to our community. We don’t just better ourselves, we also help improve those around us.

For this reason, I have chosen to help my community by way of a fundraiser benefiting Laurel House.

I recently ran the Laurel House 5K Dash Against Domestic Violence in North Wales, PA. It broke my heart, yet made me angry, to see people holding signs with the faces of loved ones who had been killed facing domestic violence.

Laurel House is an organization that offers housing and additional assistance in our immediate area of Montgomery County, PA to women and children who are trying to escape domestic violence. Every year the Laurel House organization offers emergency shelter to 150 to 200 women and their children.

They operate a transitional housing program called Bridge House in Norristown. As well, they recently just open the doors on a transitional housing program right in North Wales, called Nehemiah‘s way. Both programs offer additional support for these families such as

Children’s Services,

Life Skills Training

Emergency Financial Assistance and

Counseling Services, to name a few.

The program is designed to reduce the risk of these women and children returning to an abusive living situation.

With the holidays coming up, these mothers could definitely use some additional assistance. Help them provide their children with the normalcy of special meals and holiday gifts so they may feel as blessed as many other children in our community are. Let’s help spark joy in these families who may not see that there are good people in the world, and right around the corner, who are willing to help.

Donations to Laurel House may help provide food, household items, and gift cards for these families during the upcoming holiday season.
