short synopsis: "preparations" is a short documentary exploring health and wellbeing in Black families, following full-time firefighter, part-time swim coach Geordan Colden as he fights to protect his community while battling his own health anxieties.

about the protagonist: Nicknamed “The Neighborhood Hero” - Geordan is a jack of all trades and a master of much. A graduate of Morehouse College (‘21), he serves the city of Atlanta as Firefighter, Advanced EMT, Water Safety Instructor, Swift Water Rescue Specialist, Lifeguard, and CPR/First Aid provider.

In between fighting fires, he runs Drip No Drown Swimming - a traveling swim school specializing in trauma informed water safety for Black children and adults.

why this story matters: “preparations” is a grounded meditation on Black health and quality of life in a country where systemic racism and generational trauma have contributed to alarming racial disparities in all major health indicating fields. We focus in on one area in particular, the ability to swim, as an urgent public health and climate issue.

As climate change intensifies flooding and water-related disasters, swimming becomes a survival skill, 64% of Black Americans today lack basic swim competency. This film highlights one grassroots response—Geordan Colden’s mission to teach water safety in Atlanta’s Black communities, inspiring self-confidence and determination in the process.

about the director: Kendi is an Emmy-nominated director (Sports Emmy’s ‘24) born in Atlanta and raised in Brooklyn, NY. She is a graduate of Spelman College with a B.A. in Documentary Filmmaking. She is concerned with uplifting radical stories by equipping oppressed communities with the tools to tell them. Her work has screened at festivals such as DOC NYC, Tribeca Festival, Bronzelens, and many more.

She’s worked for industry leaders such as Netflix (inaugural post-production intern), HBO (assistant sound editor, ‘’Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show’), and NBCUniversal (Original Voices Fellowship), Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (‘Gold Rising’ Fellowship). She was named the Mountainfilm Emerging Filmmaker of the Year (‘24), and currently serves as a Coordinator for Rada Studio under Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson.

Trsyten Williams: Currently based in Atlanta, Trysten Williams is a Morehouse Graduate with a B.A. in Communications Studies who is looking to grow within teams that value creative thinking and meaningful storytelling.

Trysten is a brand storyteller and marketer with a passion for creating campaigns that move people and drive results. His background blends field marketing, content production, and strategic communications, with experience working on national campaigns and high-level media activations. At Red Bull, he supports and executes marketing strategies that connect directly with audiences through digital, on-premise, and experiential platforms. Trysten has contributed to campaigns tied to cultural events, campus engagement, and innovation programs. His work also includes performance tracking, recap reporting, and content development aligned with brand goals.

Beyond marketing, Trysten has produced award-nominated short films and collaborated with major media brands to deliver creative projects that balance authenticity with strategy. Trysten thrives in fast-paced environments, brings a sharp eye for detail and a strong sense of purpose to everything he does.
