My name is Mayra, and I am reaching out for help because of my husband, Esteban Baron. He has been detained in an immigration detention center for almost a month. He was arrested in Virginia, Minnesota and is now being held in North Dakota. He was working in construction there when a police officer pulled him over, saying he was slightly crossing the line while driving. He had a valid driver’s license and has never had a criminal record or even a traffic ticket since coming to this country. The officer immediately called immigration, and one of the agents opened the door so they could take him and the people who were with him.

He is the hardest-working and most responsible man I know, and now he is detained so far from his family and friends. He has always fulfilled all his obligations—he pays his taxes, he has no criminal record, and he already had a pending application to adjust his immigration status. But none of that seems to matter to the government. He came to this country to pursue his dreams, to work hard so he could move forward and support his family back home, because unfortunately, life in our country is extremely difficult. There are very few jobs, and even if you have work or a business, you often have to pay or seek permission just to operate.

Our 11-month-old baby is only days away from turning one, and he won’t be able to be with him for his first birthday. This situation has been incredibly difficult for me because he did nothing wrong. There was no warrant, nothing. They just took him, and now he is so far away. It is overwhelming for me to manage everything alone: four children in school, house payments, daycare costs, and now attorney fees to try to bring him home. As everyone knows, legal services are very expensive, and we are struggling to secure his release on bail. These bail bonds are extremely costly, especially in times like these. I simply cannot afford the $5,000 to $25,000 that is required for him to be reunited with his family.

I achieved my dream of becoming a U.S. citizen, and our children are citizens as well. My husband wants the same opportunity so that we can live peacefully and build a better future together. What the government is doing is not fair, because there are many others in the same situation. I would be deeply grateful for any help you can provide to support this cause and help bring him home. Mi esposo tenía su licencia de conducir en orden, nunca ha tenido un ticket ni tiene historial criminal.

El policía llamó inmediatamente a inmigración, y uno de los oficiales incluso abrió la puerta para que se llevaran a mi esposo y a todos los que estaban con él. A Esteban se lo llevaron hasta North Dakota; no sabemos la razón, y ahora está peleando su caso.

Él es el hombre más trabajador y responsable que he conocido. Siempre trata de ayudar a quien lo necesita. Hace sus taxes, no tiene ningún tipo de récord criminal, y trabaja en todo lo que puede para salir adelante. Nuestro bebé de 11 meses está a días de cumplir su primer año, y él no podrá estar presente, lo cual lo tiene muy triste.

Esta situación es muy difícil para mí. Tengo cuatro niños en la escuela, debo pagar la casa, los biles, la guardería y ahora también los servicios de un abogado. Todos sabemos que los abogados no son económicos. El abogado está tratando de obtener una fianza para que mi esposo pueda salir, pero ahora las fianzas están entre $5,000 y $25,000, una cantidad que yo no puedo pagar. Por eso estoy pidiendo su ayuda, para que él pueda regresar con nosotros, su familia y amigos.

Mi esposo vino a este país para cumplir sus sueños y salir adelante, ya que lamentablemente en nuestro país eso no es posible. Para poder trabajar o tener un negocio allá, uno tiene que pagar o pedir permiso, y aun así no hay garantías. Por esa razón él desea estar aquí, trabajando y viviendo honestamente.

Él ya tiene una aplicación pendiente con inmigración para arreglar su estatus, pero aún no ha sido aceptada, y al parecer eso no es suficiente para el gobierno. Yo logré el sueño de hacerme ciudadana de este país, y nuestros hijos también lo son. Mi esposo quiere el mismo sueño: estar aquí legalmente, seguir con nosotros y poder apoyar a su familia.

Por eso les pido su apoyo. Así como él, hay muchísimas personas en la misma situación. Hoy es por él; mañana podría ser alguien que ustedes aman y necesitan.
