I still remember sitting in my medical school lecture hall, looking around at my classmates. Each of them had a full water bottle, and if they needed more, they could simply walk down the hall to a drinking fountain. It was a simple convenience—one that most of us take for granted. But I couldn’t stop thinking about the communities I had learned about in rural Ghana, where people don’t have that option. Instead of clean, safe drinking water, they rely on still lakes, puddles, and even a well contaminated by a battery.

This realization drove me to take action. With the support of the Gull Lake Area Rotary Club, I led a team to conduct a needs assessment in four rural Ghanaian communities. Our team spoke with community leaders and confirmed what we already suspected—there was no access to clean water for nearly 2,000 people. This lack of water wasn’t just an inconvenience; it was contributing to preventable diseases like schistosomiasis and gastrointestinal distress.

Now, we are moving into Phase II: raising the funds to build sustainable water systems in these communities. Our initial assessment covered four villages, but we know of at least four more nearby that face the same dire conditions. The more funds we raise, the more communities we can reach.

Access to clean water is not a privilege—it’s a basic human right. Every donation, no matter the size, will help bring safe, reliable drinking water to people who need it most. Let’s turn this vision into reality. Together, we can make a lasting impact.
