Hi, we are Patrick and Patricia, natives of Besia. Together we are raising funds for the construction of a borehole in Besia.
Besia is a village in the EASTERN Region of Ghana, made of 40 households including 200 persons.
70% percent of its inhabitants are farmers whiles 30% are school-enrolled youth and children below the age of 15.
A house in Besia houses an average of 5-6 people. All households are intensively engaged in crop and livestock farming, most importantly and commonly, mixed farming.
Besia is a rural area with no proper road network and stable mobile connection and extends itself 5 km away from the main road.
The Besia community depends on rain-fed water streams as their main water source. Consequentially, the community lacks access to water during the dry periods.
This situation is worsened between the months of November and April when the area experiences the dry season at its peak resulting in the drying up of all streams within the area, save one.
The problem is further aggravated due to the impact of climate change.
Using unsafe water for domestic purposes anywhere in the world leads to serious WASH related health issues, with Besia being no exception.
In addition to these devastating circumstances, the women and children need walk long distances in order to get relatively clean water for their respective families in such times.
This gravely affects the education of the children who have to spend more hours journeying to and from home repeatedly in search of other available water sources for use for their families for household activities and activities of daily living, among others.
Notable impact to be made following the success of this borehole project include action towards these two and vital sustainable development goals:
SDG 4 Education: Here children are no longer deprived of their opportune times to study during the day especially since the community lacks electricity and effective studies are almost impossible at night.
●SDG 6 Clean water: Families and households now have access to a reliable water source reducing their dependency on rain, ultimately enabling them adapt to climate change
