Bringing Arleyah home.. The next step for us!

*UPDATE: Thank you all soo much for helping reach the goal to make our new house a home! Anything extra raised will go towards specialised equipment that Arleyah will need and private therapy to aid her recovery and reach her full potential. This is just the beginning.*

On the 31st January 2020 my family’s world was torn apart. My now 3 year old daughter Arleyah was involved in an incident from which she suffered a severe hypoxic brain injury.

Arleyah was transferred from our local hospital to intensive care in Great Ormand Street. For a period of time doctors were unsure whether Arleyah would survive. Thankfully, my girl is a tough cookie and she is still here with us however she will now have long life disabilities. She spent over three weeks in intensive care, a further month on the neurological ward before being transferred to The Children’s Trust for Brain Injury where she remains to this day.

Arleyah has lost all of her gross motor skills. She can no longer sit unaided, stand, walk, talk as she did and eating is a struggle. She is mainly hydrated and tube fed through a gastronomy. Arleyah is reliant upon others for all her mobility and self care needs. She no longer has any purposeful movement in her right arm and also suffers from dystonia, which for her causes uncontrolled muscle cramps and spasms, as well as shaking tremors.

Despite all of this Arleyah has made great progress in the past year. She loves nothing more than watching her favourite Disney films, singing along to nursery rhymes and making mummy read her books over and over again.

She is now medically fit to be discharged home.

This is where I need HELP!

We have been fortunate to have an amazing occupational therapist who has worked with Our local authority to find us a home that will be adapted to suit Arleyah’s needs.

However our new home will need some TLC. I will be responsible for decorating and furnishing our new home. We will need flooring throughout suitable for easy movement for Arleyah’s wheelchair and mobile hoist, also so that I can get her out on the floor and maintain her physio. At the moment we literally only have bare floorboards and if I don’t sort this Arleyah will be confined to either her bed or her wheelchair.

Furthermore, (and this is what is really hard for me to ask for help with as I hate asking anyone for anything, but I have come to the realisation I can’t do this alone, and I need help) ... I need help furnishing my house. I have a washing machine, fridge and can source a cooker. To be completely honest everything else in my old house (which isn’t a lot) brings traumatic memories for me. The items I really need are sofas, a bed and curtains/blinds.

I also have a 10 year old son. Whilst I’ve been with Arleyah, he has been living with my mum. He has been amazing throughout this traumatic year. COVID restrictions have meant that he has barely been able to see his sister as only parents can visit her. I am desperate to be home with my two children so we can move on and start living life.

Arleyah will also need specialist equipment once she is home and I am hoping I can save so that I can do work on our new garden, which in its current state will be inaccessible for Arleyah.

I was barely able to work throughout 2020 and have to had keep paying the rent and bills where we were living as well a travel costs back and forth.

I wish I didn’t have to ask anyone for help but I am overwhelmed and desperate.

Please help me make our new house a HOME!
