Bring Alethia Jones Home

“This is my last opportunity. I feel within my heart that God is going to open this door, and it will happen through this clemency”- Alethia Jones

Organize Florida fights for social, racial, and economic justice across our state. As such, we believe that police, prisons, and jails do not create real safety in our communities. The criminal justice system continues to create instability in communities of color with Black people experiencing the most impact of this injustice.  While the world responds to the pandemic, incarcerated folks are especially vulnerable when social distancing is limited, and conditions within prisons continue to neglect those inside.

Our neighbor, Alethia Jones, is a mother, sister, and friend to those who know her.  Her story is her own, but reflects the deep seeded wound that the criminal justice system has created in our communities.

Alethia struggled with addiction for years, placing her in and out of jail. Alethia was making important strides in her life during the time that she was arrested in 2004. But by this time, she was focused on quitting drugs, enrolling in GED courses, and embarking on her personal transformation.

On July 30, 2004, while Alethia was accompanying her sister, Diane, she was arrested. Not for selling or buying drugs, but for being in the passenger seat while a transaction took place. Diane received four years in prison. Alethia will spend the rest of her life behind bars without the possibility of parole. Highlands County judges sentence Black people to more than double the time of whites for felony drug crimes. Our board member, John “Jack” Jordan, has since picked up the case, and is fighting to achieve commutation (a form of clemency) for Alethia.

Can you help us get Alethia free?

It’s long overdue that the state review Alethia’s case and grant her commutation to reduce her sentence. With your donation, Jack and Alethia will have the financial support needed to fund the commutation process. Reaching our goal means: legal assistance, petition writing, and transportation fees for trips to Tallahassee. Since being incarcerated, Alethia has worked tirelessly to turn her life around including:

-Substance/addictions transition
-Life Skills
-12 step treatment program
-Parenting Courses
-NEFE High School Financial Planning program

“Alethia is a casualty of the war on drugs. During the 90’s and into the 21st century, politicians believed that incarcerating people for long periods of time would somehow eliminate drug use. The results of this theory have been disastrous, particularly for communities of color.

It is one thing to know that in the abstract, but it is poignant to be representing Alethia who is serving a life sentence for a nonviolent offense. Multiple drug convictions should not be a reason to lock someone up the rest of their life. As her lawyer, I will be filling an application for a commutation of her sentence.”
-Jack Jordan

Alethia dreams of going back to school, repairing homes, and starting an organization for domestic violence survivors and their children to gain life skills and become self-sufficient. With your donation, we’re one step closer to making that dream a reality.
