Help Restore a Piece of Route 66 History – A 1950s Gulf Gas Station
Hi, my name is James G, I’m the owner, and I'm on a mission to breathe life back into a forgotten piece of Americana – a 1950s Gulf gas station that sits quietly crumbling along the legendary Route 66.
This little building may be worn by time, but it holds more stories than its weathered walls let on. Once a bustling stop for travelers heading west, this station and the corner café next to it were part of the golden age of road trips, adventure, and American dreams.
One of the most cherished stories passed down through locals involves none other than Dean Martin and Jerry Lee Lewis. While on their way west, the duo stopped at the café next to the gas station. A young man named Melvin Williams was bussing tables that day. Jerry Lee Lewis was remembered as a bit rough around the edges, but Dean Martin? A true gentleman. He left young Melvin a silver dollar as a tip—a small act that became a big story in our town's memory.
The gas station and café were more than just businesses—they were landmarks of a bygone era, where travelers from every walk of life stopped for a bite, a tank of gas, or simply a moment of rest.
Why I Need Your Help
The building is currently in ruins, but the foundation is solid, and the spirit of what it once was is still alive. With your help, I plan to:
Restore the original structure using historically accurate materials
Preserve its unique mid-century architecture
Create a small museum or visitor stop highlighting stories like Melvin’s and other local legends
Celebrate the cultural history of Route 66 and bring this place back to life for the next generation
Every dollar will go directly toward restoration costs—structural repairs, vintage signage, paint, windows, and preserving the interior. This isn’t just about fixing up a building; it’s about preserving a story, a piece of Americana, and a connection to the past.
Be a Part of the Revival
Whether you can give $5 or $500, your support means the world. Even sharing this campaign helps. Together, we can bring this little Gulf station back from the brink and make it a stop worth visiting again.
Let’s keep the spirit of Route 66 alive—one story, one building, and one silver dollar at a time.
Thank you so much for reading and supporting!
