25 years ago, Josie Ashton put on her wedding dress and began walking, over 1,600 miles from New Jersey to Florida, to honor a woman she had never met.

The Brides’ March began in 2001 in honor of Gladys Ricart, murdered on her wedding day by an abusive ex. Gladys was a Dominican woman from Washington Heights who was murdered on her wedding day by her abusive former boyfriend. Gladys’ murder robbed her and her family from the joy of the next phase in her life - as a mother, homeowner, and accountant who was looking forward to being happily married.

Glayds’s murder sparked global outrage, and marked the beginning of what was to become a movement against domestic violence. When Josie heard Gladys’ story, it sparked a mission she couldn’t walk away from.

What started as a solo journey of grief and protest became the Brides’ March, an annual act of remembrance and resistance against domestic violence. Every year on September 26, rain or shine, we walk New York City and beyond to break the silence on domestic violence. Inspired by Josie’s first solidarity walk and in honor of Gladys, we march in wedding gowns to mourn lives stolen and demand justice.

This year, we will host our 25th Annual Brides March in New York City, plus cities across the United States and Dominican Republic. Sister marches across the United States, Dominican Republic, and beyond have sparked an international movement for a future without domestic violence.

After 25 years of grassroots organizing, we’re growing from our annual march to a year-round hub for healing, preventative education, and survivor-led advocacy.

As we become an official nonprofit, Brides’ March: The Gladys Ricart Survivors Network, help us raise $50,000 to:

Support men who date women with resources to intervene and prevent abuse, whilst honoring they are sometimes survivors themselves.

Partner with schools to share preventive education about domestic and intimate partner violence with youth programming.

Offer trauma-informed care to homicide survivors as they navigate court and the aftermath of trauma.

Identify and develop non-police interventions for domestic violence prevention.

Host our inaugural Gala event to honor a quarter century legacy of survivor-led advocacy against gender-based and domestic violence.

And of course, host our 25th Annual Brides March in New York City and the Dominican Republic!

Ayúdanos a Recaudar $50,000 para Hacer Crecer el Movimiento de la Marcha de las Novias

Hace 25 años, Josie Ashton se puso su vestido de novia y comenzó a caminar—más de 1,600 millas desde Nueva Jersey hasta Florida—para honrar a una mujer que nunca conoció.

La Marcha de las Novias comenzó en 2001 en honor a Gladys Ricart, asesinada el día de su boda por su exnovio.
