<div>Domestic violence homicides are preventable. Yet, every year, countless mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends are taken by abusive ex-partners who believe they still have dominion over their lives.

<div>The Brides’ March is both a warning and a call to action:

<div>A warning that femicide happens even after women walk away.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>A call that it will take all of us to interrupt the patterns that allow DV homicides to persist.

<div>Every year, the Brides’ March Steering Committee—10 mighty women, members of the Ricart family, and advocates from across NYC, alongside Josie Ashton from Florida—commit to marching, collaborating, listening, and creating solutions for this preventable outcome.

<div><strong>History</strong>
</div>
<div>Gladys Ricart was born October 15, 1960, in Tamboril, Dominican Republic. By age 35, she was a college graduate, an accountant, and a homeowner in Ridgefield, NJ. But on September 26, 1999, while preparing to marry her fiancé and surrounded by loved ones, Gladys was murdered in her home by the abusive ex-boyfriend she had left behind.

<div>The Brides’ March began in 2001 to honor Gladys, whose wedding day became a murder scene captured on tape and broadcast around the world, shining a light on the horrors of domestic violence.
</div>

<div>The lives of children, family, and friends were forever scarred. We often ask why women don’t leave. Gladys did—but her killer would not allow it. His act of control and violence reverberated across the world, and for one woman—<strong>Josie Ashton</strong>—it sparked a mission she could not walk away from.

<div>What began as Josie’s solo walk of grief and protest has grown into the Brides’ March: an annual act of remembrance and resistance against domestic violence. Every September 26, rain or shine, we march in wedding gowns through New York City and beyond to mourn stolen lives and demand change.

<div>This year marks our <em>25th Annual </em>Brides’ March. From New York to the Dominican Republic and across the U.S., women and allies are keeping Gladys’ story alive and standing for a world free from femicide.

<div>La Marcha de las Novias comenzó en 2001 para honrar a <strong>Gladys Ricart</strong>, cuyo día de boda se convirtió en una escena de asesinato grabada en video y transmitida por todo el mundo, revelando los horrores de la violencia doméstica.

<div>Gladys nació el 15 de octubre de 1960 en Tamboril. A los 35 años ya era graduada universitaria, contadora y propietaria de una casa en Ridgefield, Nueva Jersey. Pero el 26 de septiembre de 1999, mientras se preparaba para casarse con su prometido y rodeada de sus seres queridos, Gladys fue asesinada en su hogar por el exnovio abusivo al que había dejado.

Gladys lo hizo—pero su asesino no se lo permitió. Su acto de control y violencia reverberó en todo el mundo, y para una mujer, Josie Ashton, fue la chispa de una misión de la que no pudo apartarse.
