One in a Million: My Story
Finding hope and community in a rare cancer diagnosis.
Aloha, World. This is my cancer story.
Aloha, and welcome.
My name is Brianne Hokuao Kealoha. I'm a 46-year-old woman from Kamuela, Hawaiʻi. Until recently, my life felt pretty normal. I'm a friend, a daughter, a mother, and a sister. But in August 2024, my world was turned upside down with a diagnosis I never saw coming: breast cancer.
And not just any breast cancer. I was diagnosed with "mucinous carcinoma", a rare form that accounts for only about 2% of all breast cancer cases. When my doctors told me, I had a hard time even finding information about it. It felt like I was being thrown into a battle I knew nothing about, fighting a quiet and unusual enemy.
That's why I'm starting this blog. I'm not a doctor, a scientist, or a professional writer. I'm simply a person navigating a new life. I'm here to share my story—from the scary days of a new diagnosis to the small moments of hope and joy. My goal is to demystify mucinous carcinoma, create a space for others who feel alone with a rare diagnosis, and, most importantly, show that life doesn't stop with cancer.
My next step is to begin treatment. I have a meeting with a new oncologist on the 20th of this month to discuss the next steps in my journey.
Along the way, I'll be sharing details about my treatment, tips I've learned, and the raw emotions that come with this journey. By sharing my story, I hope to help someone else feel a little less alone.
