Breaking down barriers while holding space!

Founded in 2018 by Tanya Walker, Black Women Who aims to make space for black and brown women and children where they are seldom seen. Our mission statement is to educate (the importance of protecting our land and water), inspire (stepping outside their comfort zones to accomplish something they never thought they could accomplish), and empower (empowering women to intentionally explore beyond their abilities to see what they can accomplish). By doing so, they will be able to apply their newfound experiences to their personal lives, careers, and communities.

The difference between Black Women Who and other organizations lies in what makes Black Women Who unique? As part of our commitment to empowering our members, we want them to actively maintain memberships with our partners. The Black Women Who Scholarship Fund offers financial assistance to financially disadvantaged women. Among these activities are rowing, bouldering, sailing, swimming lessons, and so on.

Several businesses and individuals have contributed to this initiative, including NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership) program. For an 8-day backpacking trip in Alaska's Talkeetna Mountains, NOLS generously sponsored the expedition portion for a BWW member in 2022. Being the only person of color on expeditions such as hiking in the Alaskan mountains is one of the biggest barriers that black and brown people face. In light of this, Tanya Walker suggested another member attend with our sponsored member. We raffled off one more spot to another Black Women Who member. Missy Wilson was awarded that opportunity.

"After backpacking through the Talkeetna Mountains, I feel like I can do anything I put my mind to." - Missy.

Even though we have accomplished a lot, Black Women still need your support. We have been granted two spots on the LGBTQ+ Wilderness Horse Packing Expedition in May 2023. By donating, you'll provide two women with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and they won't have to do it alone. Expenses such as flights, ground transportation, gear, lodging, food, and emergency expenses will be paid with the funds.

The Black Women Who movement greatly appreciates your support.
