Breaking Down Barriers: Help Me Cross the Finish Line

Donation protected
Hi. My name is April, although some may know me as MediTate or Sunflower Scribe. Today, I'm writing across this computer screen to you not just as a writer or student, but as a young woman determined to reach her goal of graduating college — and learning that it’s okay to ask for help along the way.

In the Fall of 2024 (Aug), I began my last academic year as a Sophomore at Long Beach City College (LBCC). I had chosen Sociology as my major and soon began crafting out what my path would be. I was juggling life as a full-time student, fiber arts creator, and working full time as a tutor. Through that dedication, I raised my GPA from a 2.0 to a 2.75. I had started to find my stride — but then, life took an unexpected turn.

During the end of November 2024, I was forced to leave my family home and became homeless. This period of my life was surrounded by immense doubt, frustration, and lack of motivation within myself and my capability.

Luckily, before I was couch-surfing for more than a few weeks, a close family friend was able to offer me a place to stay until a more permanent residence was available. Months later at the beginning of my last semester at LBCC, my campus offered me an apartment-style place to live while I completed school.

Even while moving and navigating housing instability, I stayed focused. I applied to universities, kept up with schoolwork, and worked to make ends meet. And somehow, through all of it, I made it. I’m proud to share that I was accepted into Cal State Fullerton for Fall 2025, where I will be majoring in Sociology with a concentration in Social Inequalities, and minoring in Comparative Literature.

Furthermore in June 2025, I graduated with my Associates of Arts for Transfer in Sociology on June 5, 2025! This moment was a testament to my determination, hard work, and resilience that I posess.

A few things I've learned from the past year:
  • Nothing will work for you unless you do. Progress doesn’t come easy — it comes from showing up, even on your worst days.
  • Hard work ALWAYS pays off. As I reflect on the year, I realize that I made it through this year because I kept pushing forward, even when I had every reason to stop.
  • It is ok to admit when you need support. As much as I took control of my circumstances, I also must acknowledge the support system that stood firm so that I could lean on them.

Now, I’m humbly asking for support as I begin this next chapter.
The funds raised will go toward:
  • First semester textbooks
  • Rental fees and security deposit
  • Food and basic living expenses

Your contribution, no matter the amount, is an investment in my future — and a reminder that community can carry us through even the hardest chapters.

Thank you for reading, supporting, and believing in my journey.

With gratitude,
April
