My sister Ashley found out she was pregnant on Super Bowl Sunday (of all days!), and surprised her husband, Alex, that night with the test results. Tears were shed, phone calls made, and many hearts were filled with happy excitement. The following months flew by without problems, the pregnancy was going smoothly and they couldn't wait for October to arrive so they could meet their baby boy. Then, on July 6th, everything changed.... Ashley had sudden pains that sent her to the hospital where they found she was going into premature labor; 3 months early! She was rushed to another hospital with a NICU ward, where they got the contractions under control in a few days. She was sent home with high hopes that their baby would be okay until his October due date.
Only six hours later Alex was bringing her to the local emergency room; she was loaded into an ambulance and rushed back to the specialist hospital. She and Alex were terrified. Not only was it completely unexpected, but this was their first pregnancy.
The very next day, July 10th, their world was forever changed. Baby Sebastian decided he wasn't waiting any longer and was coming into the world early. The little guy was born at only around 2.4lbs, and instead of being able to bring him home he's had to stay in the NICU over an hour away from Ashley and Alex. It's been unbelievably hard for them. Seeing him in an isolette (incubator) and connected to so many wires .... it breaks their hearts. With COVID restrictions they couldn't even stay at the Ronald McDonald House nearby and have had to travel back and forth just to see their baby boy.
My sister and brother-in-law were prepared for a normal birth and got thrown a curveball. This also means a big financial curveball. Little Sebastian will have to stay in the NICU for an undetermined amount of time, and with Ashley and Alex suddenly becoming a single income household it's hard to say what this will do to them financially. The hospital bills and travel expenses are going to be far more than anticipated. Any help you can give is so appreciated by all of us.
