On behalf of the family, we are reaching out to the community, family and friends to ask for help. As many of you know, Christine Howell’s son Deondre Smith fall ill late Tuesday night, March 19, 2019 at home complaining of stomach pains along with fainting and needing to vomit. He was then taken via ambulance to Capital Regional Medical Center (CRMC) for evaluation. When Deondre arrived his heart rate was elevated and he contained to pass out each time he tried to stand. He was given an IV with 3 bags of fluids for being dehydrated and held for several hours. Wednesday morning around 2am after running test CRMC detected Deondre has an abnormal heart and transferred him to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital (TMH). Once transferred, he was given more fluids and more test were ran. His blood pressure contained to be low and his heart rate was still too high. He was still complaining of stomach pains and passing out each time he stands. Deondre finally went to the restroom and it was then realized he was bleeding internally. By Thursday night Deondre needed a blood transfusion. It was also then, that the family was told TMH was not equipped to handle Pediatrics Gastroenterology (GI) issues.  Therefore, Deondre would be transferred to another hospital.

This time Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, FL Friday afternoon. After more test it was found that Deondre suffered from a Meckel’s diverticulum- this is a small, abnormal pocket that form in the wall of the child’s small intestine. During normal development of the gastrointestinal tract, a small duct forms off an area of what will eventually become the small intestine. The doctors were sure this would fixed the issue of the internal bleeding. However, once in the small intestine it was found this was not the cause of the internal bleeding.

On Monday March 25, 2019, Deondre will have to undergo more testing which results into more time in the hospital. More time his mother and father have to miss work, drive back and forth from Jacksonville, FL to Crawfordville, FL to take care of their other children, houses and pets.
