Hi,
My name is Scott Hagaman. I manage an upscale restaurant in Granger, IN. The employee I am attempting to raise funds for doesn't even know I am doing this. But I'd like to tell you a little bit about one of our dishwashers.
First, he doesn't like to call himself homeless. But he lives in his car. His very small car. And he currently lives in our parking lot. With his two cats. Actually, previously with his cat and his kitten. His kitten was run over two days ago in our parking lot. Entrails everywhere. This broke his heart. And he loved nothing more than that kitten. I watched him drop to his knees, throw his arms up to heaven, and wail in agony.
Granted, letting a kitten live in a parking lot is not the wisest... I helped him box it up in a cardboard coffin for burial, and one of my servers fortuitously showed up with blankets and hand warmers for him moments later. Our staff cares about his well-being deeply, and I am deeply grateful to them for that. But he needs more help.
Second, he doesn't want an apartment or a house. In fact, he is content living out of his car. It is how he wants to live. I don't think he will ever transition to a more traditional lifestyle. He has adapted to this situation. But his car is too small for him to live out of, and it doesn't run, and his cats (now cat) certainly can't call it a safe home with him. At the bare minimum, he needs a safe space large enough to store his belongings and keep his cats inside it, rather than running loose. And while he did have a storage unit, that was broken into and he lost everything there.
Third, he has a good heart. He is a very kind, empathetic individual. But this world is not really suited for someone like him. It is too cruel, and he is somewhat naive about that fact. I will leave it at him being somewhat autistic. But his heart is wonderful, and he works hard when he can (and when mental issues don't impede that work, as they sometimes do.) He isn't stupid, but his goals aren't those of most? And while he has had drug and alcohol issues in the past, he has been clean for some time.
I would like to attempt to raise enough funds to buy him a larger (working) car and/or van. Ideally, I would like to find a used van and be able to install a solar panel on the roof and a battery so he can provide himself with heat at night without using gas to do so. Currently, he idles his car on gas to provide heat in the frigid fall and winter months, which is ludicrously expensive.
In short, I hope to raise enough funds to buy a somewhat larger working vehicle that can be outfitted with a solar panel and battery so that my dishwasher, who has much to overcome, and who has recently lost almost everything, including his little kitten and everything in his storage unit, can live out of it in a somewhat more humane and respectable fashion. I want to bring some light into his life at a time when everything is being ripped away from him. Absent that kind of light, I expect him to return to old methods of medication that are not good.
Would you be willing to help me help someone? If so, I would be very thankful.
