Hi my name is Alfie and I am a student at North Durham Academy. I am participating in an expedition to Borneo in 2027. This will be a four week expedition and will include community development work, environmental projects and wildlife conservation. It will also have additional elements such as scuba diving.

The core objectives of this expedition are to undertake projects in order to:

- Raise the educational standards of developing communities within a rural district of Borneo

- Raise the living standards of developing communities, within a rural district of Borneo

- Assist with ongoing wildlife conservation programs to preserve biodiversity and protect vulnerable habitats.

This expedition is extremely important to me because I feel that I will acquire and develop many important life skills such as understanding of other cultures, how lucky we are to live the way we do, giving up electronics and Wi-Fi, learning new skills, helping a community rebuild and understanding more about nature and its importance.

I must admit though this is very much out of my comfort zone, I am nervous about leaving my family for so long, I’m nervous that I wont fit in or be helpful within the community- all of these I need to overcome by finding out my skills, working hard and dedicating my time before and during the trip in helping this community the best way I can.
